There is something so charming and magical about pixie hats on babies and children. They are whimsical and sweet and most importantly keep little heads warm and cosy.
I love the Finley pattern by Dover & Madden. It’s a quick to knit and very easy to follow pattern with a wonderful finished result. Over the years I have made a few in various sizes. I also like the fact that I can use various yarns to create different sizes.
I know I have previously written about how I can never seem to get the sizing of hats right for my main boy Luke, they always seem to end up too big. A previous post about the many hats for Luke is here. But I have finally managed to make him one that fits him great – that was until I washed it and until the DROPS Merino Extra Fine stretched out.
The pattern is this adorable Pixie Hat, available for free on Ravelry. It’s a very quick knit and the DROPS Merino Extra Fine works really well for it as it’s luxuriously soft, and it provides the right stretch (that is before you wash it).
And yes, Luke picked the pink and blue himself…a great metrosexual in the making here!
The great thing about this balaclava/hat is that it can be worn when it’s getting warmer outside, even when it’s already warm enough not to wear a jacket, as it will keep ears and heads warm!
And what about that pixie point at the back, isn’t it just brilliant?
This hat photographs best when it’s being worn, but just in case you were interested, here are some pretty boring shots of it lying flat:
Late last year I made a couple of things for a friend from school, as she had a baby boy. I should have posted about it before now, but never mind. My friend took some pictures of her little boy wearing the hat and the booties (post to follow later), so I now have even more of a reason to post about both of them.
It’s the DROPS pattern that I also knitted for Luke last year, you can see my blog post about it here.
I used some leftover yarn that I had in my stash, and as at the time of knitting I didn’t yet know whether it was going to be a boy or girl I picked this neutral colour.
It was really easy and quick to knit and I’m really pleased with the finished item. And the ‘pixieness’ of the hat is just adorable.
And now, would you just look at this adorable little boy in the hat…he’s just too precious for words. I also love that rug, it’s so cool!
When I saw the new DROPS Design baby patterns I knew that I absolutely had to knit this one. It’s the pattern I love, but with an added twist.
It was a really easy knit, and very similar to my other favourite hat pattern. It calls for DROPS Alpaca, so I used that in a brown. I did knit the 12-18 months size, but it seems very snug indeed on Luke.
While it does seem very snug Luke has been wearing it for the last 2 weeks or so during the cold snap that we’ve just had here. But you can judge for yourselves.
